Oil on canvas

By this point I was replacing any kind of figure in motion with a sense of suspended animation in the most generalized sense I could. Some of the floating forms, like this one, are my own variations of Vernor Panton designs.

I used to have music equipment repaired by a guy out in Lancaster who's work space was a hoarder's mess of cables, broken gear, and scattered parts. He eventually disappeared in the night with a bunch of my recording equipment.

I documented his space and used it as the background for most of these paintings.

I had spent over a decade building contrasts in my work that I felt were completely ignored, or maybe just lost on the audience, and this work was my attempt to put a new set of contrasts into an image. Being mixed race is a life of contrasts.

One of the most absurd double standards relentlessly leveled on me in the art business was that I can't be an artist and a musician.

In general, I mix every color that goes on a canvas, similarly I don't use a lot of preset sounds in my music. I didn't own a tube of "black" oil paint until after this was made.

In Circles is from the two-person show Interiors with Claudia Parducci at Nye + Brown, Los Angeles.
